National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) certification For Insurance Adjusters

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist private insurance companies in covering the large payouts that come with the devastation of extensive flooding. Due to the risk, and inability to offer cost-effective flood coverage, standard homeowners policies often do not cover flood claims.
The number of available and NFIP certified adjusters is usually much lower than needed. This is why insurance adjusters who qualify should not hesitate to get certified. After you receive your certification, your name and authorization number will be stored in the NFIP database, making it official that you are qualified to handle these claims.
NFIP Certification Requirements
All independent insurance adjusters who wish to become certified must submit the Adjuster Certification Application. This application includes five levels of authorization. Adjusters can be authorized in one to five of the following categories:
- Residential (Dwelling)
- Manufactured (Mobile) Home/Travel Trailer
- Small Commercial (General Property)
- Large Commercial (General Property)
- Condominium (RCBAP)
To be approved for Residential, Commercial, Manufactured (Mobile) Home losses, or any combination thereof, an adjuster must:
- Have at least 4 consecutive years of full-time property loss adjusting experience.
- Be capable of preparing an accurate scope of damage and dollar estimate to $50,000 for manufactured (mobile) homes and to $500,000 for residential and commercial losses.
- Have attended an NFIP workshop and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the SFIP and of NFIP adjustment criteria for all policy forms.
- Be familiar with Manufactured (Mobile) Home and Increased Cost of Compliance adjusting techniques.
To be approved for Large Commercial or RCBAP losses, or both, an adjuster must:
- Have at least 5 consecutive years of full-time large-loss property adjusting experience.
- Be capable of preparing an accurate scope of damage and dollar estimate of $500,000 or more.
- Submit written recommendations from three insurance company supervisory or claim management personnel. The recommendations must reflect adjusting experience only.
- Provide information regarding current Errors and Omissions coverage.
